Ukraine Celebrates Ukrainian Writing and Language Day on 27 October

A variety of events are held in cultural institutions, libraries, schools, and universities to mark the occasion. The holiday provides an opportunity to reflect on the ancient roots of the Ukrainian language, which, according to the Constitution of Ukraine, is the country’s sole state language. It also allows people to learn about the history of its alphabet and the development of Ukrainian writing. Additionally, the day promotes the use of Ukrainian both in Ukraine and abroad.

For 25 consecutive years, the All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation of National Unity has been a key feature of the celebrations. This year, it will be held on 25 October, inviting anyone to participate by writing the dictated text at home. Participants are encouraged to photograph their completed dictation and send it to a designated email address. Those who submit error-free texts will receive prizes from the organizers.

The Ukrainian Writing and Language Day plays a crucial role in uniting society, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering Ukraine’s national identity. It highlights the importance of language policy in nation-building and offers a chance to exchange experiences with other European countries regarding language policy and the preservation of national languages.
