EFNIL’s Statement on the access to media and communication devices in all European Languages

The European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL) has issued a formal statement urging the European Commission and European Parliament to enhance access to media content and communication devices in the full spectrum of European languages.

Addressing concerns raised by the rise of digital services and artificial intelligence, EFNIL warns that limited language options in popular media, communication platforms, and technology devices restrict linguistic diversity and may harm multilingualism in the EU. The statement highlights that international corporations often overlook smaller languages, which goes against the EU’s commitment to language equality. EFNIL raises concern that such practices are not in accordance with the EU’s 2018 resolution on language equality and urges the EU to adapt the relevant directives to ensure all European citizens can access media and technology in their native languages, preserving linguistic diversity across the Union.
