Leaders of the official national language Institutions in Europe together with representatives of the language institutions of the European Commission and the European Parliament are gathering to analyse and discuss the role of media and AI in the use of the languages in Europe. The event will be held live, with options for virtual participation.
About the Conference
Europe’s linguistic diversity, covering national, regional, minority, migrant, and heritage languages, is affected by media, from traditional broadcasting and print to online platforms and social media. The conference will examine how the recent developments in these media environments influence language use, learning, prestige, and survival.
Discussions will address how media affect language standardisation, multilingual practice, code-switching, and revitalisation efforts. Special attention will be given the increasing use of artificial intelligence in communication and media production.
The conference will explore three central questions:
1. Media as a driver of standardisation and diversity: How historical and contemporary media, including public broadcasters and community media, affect the languages used in Europe.
2. AI-powered media and language transformation: How AI, automatic translation, voice assistants, and text-generation tools are reshaping vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation across European languages, and how language institutions can respond.
3. Media, identity, and language ideologies: How media representation shapes public perceptions of linguistic legitimacy, prestige, and hierarchy, and how inclusive media practices can support multilingual identities.
